Summary
This article explains how Subjects and Classes work in the timetable, how to name classes clearly, when to mark a class as an elective, and how to create single classes, blocks/lines, double lessons, and custom start times.
Subjects
Subjects are imported from your MIS, along with the associated subject code.
Classes
A class is a group of students learning a subject, taught by a teacher, in a room, for a set period.
You can create classes as:
- A single class
- A block/line class (as a Class group or Modules)
Class group: A set of single lessons under a core class (for example, Modern Languages containing Spanish and German, or Maths containing Set 1 and Set 2).
Modules: A lesson that is made up of two or more study units (for example, Music containing Music Theory and Music Practice).
Naming classes
Each class must have a unique, clear name.
Recommended format:
{Subject} {Year/Group} {Set} (for example, Maths 7A, Maths 7B)
Clear naming makes it easier to filter, allocate cover, and resolve timetable issues.

Elective classes
Select the This class is an elective tick box when:
- The class is for a subject that students choose (for example, GCSE options).
- The class is not taught in standard tutor groups (for example, set classes such as Maths Set 1, Set 2, Set 3).
This tells the system the class is not a core subject for all students, so it must be scheduled in a way that respects individual student selections.
Tip: Do not select the elective option for core subjects that all students in the year group must take—unless the classes are split into sets (where solving at a student level is required).
Add a class
To add a class, enter a Class name and set the following fields:
- Subject
- Year group
- Group (MIS Group or Custom Group)
- Room (optional)
- Teacher (optional)
- Total teaching time per rotation
- Length per lesson (minutes)
Optional room or teacher
If you leave Room blank, the system can automatically assign an appropriate room during timetable generation based on your Rooms and Subject permissions. If you leave Teacher blank, the system can allocate an available teacher who is qualified to teach the selected subject.
Double lessons
The timetable distributes lessons across the rotation, but you can set up double lessons for subjects that require longer sessions.
To create a double lesson:
- In Length per lesson, set the duration to twice your standard lesson length (for example, a 60-minute lesson becomes 120 minutes).
- Click Save details to apply the change.
Create a new block or line class
Create the Class name, choose the Year group, then select the Class type: Class group or Modules.
Custom start time
Select the tick box to Add a custom start time for one lesson.
